Spot on!

And it is, perhaps, far worse in America where the political elites at all levels ignore the clear needs, will, and preferences of the people.

It's no surprise that Democratic elites have forsaken their FDR New Deal and LBJ Great Society roots, but instead have abandoned The People in favor of corporate funding (and with it obedience & fealty) and "Republican Lite".

It's also no surprise that Democrat elites did everything in their power to crush Bernie Sander's People's political movement out of fear of loss of control and ownership of The Party. Instead of sailing with the winds of political change and supporting a blooming populisim against a grossly dysfunctional and ossified party and system, Democratic elites abandoned The People yet again.

We can see the results.

For contacts it's important to note that the overwhelming majority of the Democratic elite is in fact to the right of Republican President Eisenhower. Let that sink in...

The only way the Democratic party in the US survives is to surrender to actual deeply democratic engagement and surrender the elite positions of power to those who can carry an authentic grassroots populist and Democratic message forward.

Finally, Roger, everything you've written and recommended requires courage and trust. The courage to let go and surrender into a greater shared, inclusive, accountable social and political destiny. And, trust in each other, trust in the process, and trust that a far better world is not only possible but also our personal and collective responsibility.

We must empower people, not patronize them. If we want to people to believe in democracy, we have to stop treating rule by the distinguished - aristocracy - as democratic. We have to stop blaming the victim and focusing our advocacy on shaming people to vote harder for elite middlemen. We must offer to actually put common people in charge. Sortition can do that.
